The Bubbles of the Deep

Long story short
Hired to illustrate a story about two small bubble-fishes children, Odysseus and Diamantis.
This story is about accepting being different, and was written by a team of child psychologists

Character Design Brief
Everything starts with a great character concept. Steam boat Willie would never be as succeesfull without Mickey.
A successful character, protagonist or the villain defines the story, and elevates even a non interesting one.
In this story there were had two major protagonists, and no villain, but we also wanted each non central character, the other fishes for example, to express a different personality
"Both characters to have distinctively thorns, one of them should have black thorns but both balance between ugly and cute."
"The characters both bubble fishes they should exhibit a different personalities"
"Odysseus being more clever, “let’s say a leader”, while Diamantis should be more timid, “like a follower of some kind"
Notes of the character brief

Background Design

I researched on movies like finding Dory, Nemo, little Mermaid but also Aquaman and stuff from nostalgia cartoons
Inspired by the works of Disney, I tried to make the underwater scenery as much alive as possible, with beautiful, rich and colourful backgrounds.
I accomplished that by using a spritelike philosophy creating assets with the same mood able to mix and match together to create vibrant backgrounds.
I initially designed with pencil some backgrounds and gradually I built on those concepts

Adopt a Sprite Philosophy
I accomplished creating many rich and different background fast by using a spritelike philosophy creating assets with the same mood able to mix and match together to create vibrant backgrounds.
I initially designed with pencil some backgrounds and gradually I built on those concepts

Accomplished to create
more than illustration,
